The Star Wars franchise has really come a long way from the first films of the original trilogy. The franchise has significantly expanded to include several amazing TV series, books, comics, animated series and video games. One such video game is Respawn Entertainment’s 2019 action-adventure game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, whose story is centred around the journey of Cal Kestis, a Jedi Padawan on the run from the Imperial Inquisitors of the Galactic Empire.
As one of the first video games to fully utilise a variety of lightsaber colours (from both Star Wars Legends and Canon), fallen order adopts a Metroidvania-style design that allows new areas to be accessed by players as Cal Kestis unlocks new abilities and skills with their custom neopixel lightsabers.
Using Cal Kestis’ Force powers and lightsaber, players can defeat various enemies, from bounty hunters and wild beasts to stormtroopers. The lightsaber used in the game has a default blue colour, but players can unlock up to eight more lightsaber colours by the end of the game. This means that it is entirely possible for a player to make Cal’s lightsaber the same purple colour as Mace Windu’s lightsaber or the same red colour as Darth Revan lightsaber as they progress in the game.
Apart from being fun glowing swords that cut through almost anything, one thing that makes the lightsaber unique is the power within and the meaning behind each kyber crystal and lightsaber colour. Below are all the lightsaber colours available in fallen order, including the meanings behind them.
Blue
This is starting or default colour of Cal’s lightsaber in fallen order. Blue is also the most common lightsaber colour, and it is representative of a Jedi who is very much physical with the Force (a Jedi Guardian). The blue lightsaber symbolises important Jedi traits like loyalty, justice, stability and trust. As mentioned before, this lightsaber colour is available by default in Jedi fallen order, so there is no need to unlock it.
Green
Like blue, the green kyber crystal is readily available to a player at the start of the game. All they have to do is go to the lightsaber workbench to activate it. In terms of symbolism, a green lightsaber represents wisdom, growth, and nature, which explains why it was such a fitting colour for wise Masters like Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn.
Purple
This is one of the rarest lightsaber colours in the Star Wars canon, with Mace Windu being the only one to wield it in the films. As a mix of both red and blue, a purple lightsaber colour represents moral ambiguity (indicating a darker side of a powerful Jedi). It also represents power and royalty.
In order to change his lightsaber to purple in the game, Cal will first need to visit the planet Ilum to obtain a purple kyber crystal.
Orange
In the Star Wars canon, only Cal Kestis is known to wield an orange lightsaber so much isn’t known about its meaning. Star Wars Legends does give some indication that an orange lightsaber represents energy and warmth.
In the fallen order game, the orange kyber crystal was originally only available as a pre-order bonus, but as of now, it is free to all players.
Indigo
As a colour between blue and purple, indigo is the only fallen-order colour that has no past in both Legends and Canon, so there is really no information on its symbolism. However, since it’s between blue and purple, it could indicate wisdom, spirituality and intuition.
For players of the game, indigo kyber crystals will have to be gotten on the planet Ilum.
Cyan
Cyan isn’t a colour that has appeared in Star Wars canon, but it has appeared in Star Wars Legends with Meera Surik (a Jedi during the Old Republic) wielding it. As a mix between blue and green, a cyan lightsaber symbolises peace and calmness. Like other rare colours in fallen order, a cyan kyber crystal can only be unlocked on Ilum.
Yellow
In Star Wars canon, yellow lightsabers made an appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. It is also a very prominent colour in games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic. A yellow lightsaber colour represents optimism and warmth, and they are typically reserved for Jedi Sentinels that have mastered the balance between scholarly pursuits and combat.
Yellow kyber crystals can be obtained on Ilum In Fallen Order.
Magenta
A magenta-coloured lightsaber blade is also quite rare, but characters like Mara Jade in the Star Wars Legends have been known to wield one. The vibrant mix of purple and pink can represent harmony, compassion and femininity.
Red
This is the colour of Sith and Dark Side lightsabers. The colour represents power, danger, passion and greed. A red kyber crystal is typically unavailable in the fallen order game, but players can unlock it by first completing the entire campaign before proceeding to begin a new journey + at the game’s main menu. They will need to play through and beat the game’s opening prologue in order to land on the first planet, where they can now go to the workbench and select a red kyber crystal. A red lightsaber is, however, only for aesthetics, as it won’t give players any gameplay advantages or additional abilities.
Conclusion
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is one of the first Star Wars games to feature a variety of lightsaber colours from both Star Wars canon and legends. The nine colours that are featured in the game are; blue, orange, green, yellow, purple, magenta, cyan, indigo, and red (which has to be unlocked specially).
