It’s a fairly self-explanatory process, but for anyone out there who needs a little direction, keep reading for a simple and short step-by-step guide.

Step #1 – Make the Rifle Safe
The first and perhaps most important step in the process is safety-related. You need to take the mag out and pull back the action of your Savage 308 to double-check that there’s no round in the chamber. Then, place the rifle on a cleaning mat and get your cleaning rod ready.
Step #2 – Put the Safety to ‘Fire’
Next, you have to take the safety catch off (after pulling the trigger), and this will allow you to take out the bolt part of the action. You should now get full access to the chamber and the barrel. Have your gun oil ready, as you’ll need it in a moment or two.
Step #3 – Push the Cleaning Rod Through the Barrel
With all the action parts out of the way, you should now be able to feed the cleaning rod through the barrel without any trouble. Before doing so, put a little cleaning rag on the end so as to pick up all the grime and carbon build-up that might be there. Repeat a couple of times until you no longer get dirt on the rag after it has been pulled through.
Step #4 – Oil The Barrel
The next part of cleaning your Savage 308 hunting rifle is to oil the barrel. The good news is that all that’s required is to use the rod again, pushing it through the barrel with a couple of extra globs of oil on it. This will coat the inside of the barrel and keep it in perfect condition until you fire it again. After you’re done, just peer down the barrel to ensure no fibres remain.
