In 1939, he moved to Bombay, where he joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). He acted in plays such as Pathan, Aakhri Dastak, and Naujawan. He also wrote several plays, including Ek Din Ka Sultan and Ek Thi Larki.
In 1953, he made his debut in films with the classic Do Bigha Zamin, for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. He then went on to star in several other films, including Pyaasa (1957), Kabuliwala (1961), and Haqeeqat (1964). He also wrote and directed the film Garam Coat (1965).
